Hemant Chaturvedi

Hemant Chaturvedi(B. 1968) grew up oblivious of cameras and their possibilities, until he was appointed the editor of The Xavierite, the Mumbai St. Xavier’s College annual magazine. He took a few photos for the cover, and used the one that he thought was right. While he was well on his way in achieving his goal to be a journalist, he got sidetracked into the big bad world of the movies, and there he remained until 2015, when, in a sudden epiphanic moment, decided to quit Cinematography and become an urban hermit. In an attempt to reinvent his life, he started delving into the boxes upon boxes of negatives and gigabytes aplenty of digital format photography on his computer.

Goaded by his conscience, he decided being a hermit was somewhat wasteful at his age and wanted to show his vast collection of photographic activities to the world. These activities had been, essentially, a direct consequence of the often needlessly stressful atmosphere of movie sets, a state of mind he was never comfortable with. So at the first available opportunity he would gather his trusted Olympus kit and wander off into the sunset looking to regain his temporarily displaced equilibrium.

He managed to be the Director of Photography on a large number of very highly acclaimed movies, Company, Makdee, Maqbool, 15 Park Avenue, Kurbaan, Ishaqzaade, DekhTamashaDekh, Brothers, and even an animation feature called Arjun the Warrior Prince. But something seemed missing and the decision to quit was from the fundamental desire to no longer be dependent on a million factors to further his intellect. He instead, chose to be self dependent.

This exhibition is his first example of the benefits of being hyper active all his life, when the desire to slow down found subsistence in past involvements.

He has 8 published photoessays, the last one in June 2017, on his Kailash MansarovarYatra, which got a record number of readers for Conde Nast India.

He now plans to look deeper inward and outward, ensuring his well-hidden past work is seen and simultaneously work on a million new ideas for his cameras and his fountain pens.
